Department History Overview

1902

Fire Association established in Hillsdale.

1906

First Fire House Built (Central Ave. & Park Pl.). First horse drawn apparatus purchased (Hook & Ladder Co. #1).

1907

First horse drawn hose cart purchased (Hose Co. #1).

1912

Fire Department founded (active members of the association). Hose Company #2 recognized by the Town.

1914

Active Fire Department was recognized as the official town fire department. First motorized (Mathieson) vehicle purchased, replacing the hose cart.

1916

Became a Charter Member of the NJ & NY Firemen’s Association.

1918

Mathieson truck was replaced with an Alco Six hose truck. The Mathieson was refitted as a chemical truck.

1919

Hose Co. #1 and Hose Co. #2 merged.

1921

First motorized H&L purchased, replacing the horse drawn and chemical units. A borough ordinance created the official Hillsdale Fire Department as a borough department.

1926

Mack Hook & Ladder purchased, replacing the Mathieson. Fire House was remodeled.

1929

Alco Six was replaced by a new Sanford Pumper.

1941

Ward LaFrance was purchased, replacing the Mack Ladder.

1945

Became a Charter Member of the Pascack Valley Firemen’s Association.

1950

A Mack Pumper was purchased as a second engine.

1955

Became a member of the NJ State Fire Prevention Associaton.

1955

Ford Pumper (750 GPM) was purchased, replacing the Sanford.

1958

A new firehouse was built ( Hillsdale Ave. / Current location).

1961

Maxim 75’ Ladder truck was purchased, Ward converted to Emegency.

1964

Hahn Emergency truck purchased.

1965

Maxim Pumper (1000 GPM) was purchased, replacing the Mack engine: Ward LaFrance retired.

1968

The second floor was added to the firehouse.

1970

Maxim Pumper (1250 GPM) was purchsed.

1976

A Maxim Pumper (1250 GPM) was purchased, replacing the Ford engine.

1980

Freightliner Emergency truck was purchased, replacing the Hahn.

1981

Maxim Ladder was rebuilt.

1984

Maxim Pumper (1000 GPM) was rebuilt (1250 GPM pump installed).

1995

Firehouse remodeled adding a new bay.

1996

Pierce Pumper (2000 GPM) was purchased, replacing the 1970 Maxim pumper.

2000

American LaFrance (93’) Tower Ladder replaced the 1961 Maxim Ladder. Maxim 1976 Pumper retired.
